Learning how to prepare for a graduate oral defense is not about memorizing a perfect script. It is about understanding your study or project well enough to explain decisions, recognize limits, and reason through an unfamiliar question.
A defense allows the committee to examine both the completed work and your command of it. Expectations vary across theses, dissertations, capstones, and professional projects, so program guidance and faculty direction remain the primary authority.

Then reread the final submitted document—not an earlier draft. Create a one-page map containing the problem, purpose, question or aim, framework, method, main findings, limitations, implications, and recommendations. Add one sentence explaining the connection between each element.
Your preparation should focus on decisions. Why this problem? Why this population? Why this method? Why these measures? Why is this conclusion justified? Faculty may ask about facts, but the defense usually tests whether you can explain the reasoning that shaped the work.
Know the central argument without reciting it
Write three versions of the project's explanation: one sentence, one minute, and three minutes. Each version should state what was investigated or changed, why it mattered, what you did, what you found, and what the result means.
